“A lengthy struggle between France and Great Britain for the islands ended in 1814, when they were ceded to the latter. Independence came in 1976. Socialist rule was brought to a close with a new constitution and free elections in 1993. President France-Albert RENE, who had served since 1977, was re-elected in 2001, but stepped down in 2004. Vice President James MICHEL took over the presidency and in July 2006 was elected to a new five-year term; he was reelected in May 2011.”
CIA's The World Factbook (2013)9
“Welcome to paradise. It may be a much-abused cliché, but the sandy, turquoise-rimmed islands that make up the Seychelles come as close to living up to this claim as anywhere on the planet. Close your eyes and imagine: you´re lazing on a talcum-powder beach lapped by topaz waters and backed by lush hills and big glacis boulders. Brochure material? No, just routine in the Seychelles. Many think the eye-catching images of turquoise seas and shimmering white sands are digitally enhanced but, once here, they realise the pictures barely do them justice.
With such a dreamlike setting, the Seychelles is unsurprisingly a choice place for newlyweds. But for those looking for more than a suntan or romance, this archipelago offers a number of high-energy distractions. There are jungle and coastal walks, boat excursions, and diving and snorkelling to keep you buzzing, as well marine parks and natural reserves filled with endemic species.
The Seychelles is also more affordable than you think. On top of ultra-luxurious options, the country has plenty of self-catering facilities and family-run guesthouses. So if you are suffering from visions of tropical paradise, here is your medicine.”

The United Nations produces an annual Human Development Report which includes the Human Development Index. The factors taken into account include life expectancy, education and schooling and Gross National Income (GNI) amongst many others..
The Social and Moral Development Index concentrates on moral issues and human rights, violence, public health, equality, tolerance, freedom and effectiveness in climate change mitigation and environmentalism, and on some technological issues. A country scores higher for achieving well in those areas, and for sustaining that achievement in the long term. Those countries towards the top of this index can truly said to be setting good examples and leading humankind onwards into a bright, humane, and free future. See: Which are the Best Countries in the World? The Social and Moral Development Index.
Progress is always going to be difficult in a country where the richest 10% hold 40% of the country's entire income13.

Population:
Seychelles's population is predicted to fall to 92 000 by 2030. This country has a fertility rate of 2.32. The fertility rate is, in simple terms, the average amount of children that each woman has. The higher the figure, the quicker the population will grow, although, to calculate the rate you also need to take into account morbidity - the rate at which people die. If people live healthy and long lives and morbidity is low, then, 2.0 approximates to the replacement rate (two new children for each set of parents who die), which would keep the population stable. If all countries had such a fertility rate, population growth would end. The actual replacement rate in most developed countries is around 2.1. The highest fertility rate ever detected in a single year was in Yemen in 1985, at 8.86.14Population2

The countries with the best overall approach to public health, in terms of both public policy and individual lifestyle choices, are Monaco, Liechtenstein and The Isle of Man28. These countries are worth emulating. And, although often through no fault of the average citizen, the worst countries are S. Sudan, Angola and Nigeria28.
21 datasets are used to calculate points for each country, including multiple decades of data on its average life expectancy, its alcohol consumption rate, its fertility rate, its smoking rate, its suicide rate, its food aid and health contributions and WHO compliance, the prevalence of overweight adults, its adolescent birth rate and its immunizations take-up. The regions with the best average results per country are Scandinavia, Europe and The Balkans28, whereas the worst are Africa, Micronesia and Melanesia28.

Health:
Seychelles does relatively well in encouraging good health, compared to many other countries. Seychelles comes in the best 20 when it comes to its immunizations take-up29 (the best in Africa). It does better than average when it comes to its suicide rate30 (amongst the lowest in Africa) and in its fertility rate15. Seychelles does not succeed in everything, however. Seychelles does worse than average in its smoking rate31, its average life expectancy11 (still high for Africa), its food aid and health contributions and WHO compliance32 and in its adolescent birth rate33 (still good for Africa). And finally, it falls into the worst 20 in terms of its alcohol consumption rate34 (amongst the highest in Africa). The prevalence of overweight adults has increased by 14% between 1976 and 2016. Life expectancy in Seychelles improved by +5.2yrs in the 30 years from 1990, less than the global average of +7.9yrs. Just one data point in the 1970s, and two lower ones in the 1980s.Life Expectancy Higher is better11

All countries' current and historical approach towards the environment is gauged via 21 datasets, including multiple decades of data on its forested percent change 2000-2020, its environmental performance, energy to GDP efficiency, its sign-up rate to major international accords on protecting the environment, the rate of rational beliefs on the environment in the population, reducing annual meat consumption per person and its score on the Green Future Index.
The countries that do the best (Sri Lanka, Uruguay and Switzerland) tend to have avoided the excesses of early industrial countries, and have not yet repeated the same mistakes of environmental destruction - at least, not on the same scale. The regions with the best average results per country are Central America, South America and Scandinavia. The worst are Eritrea, The Vatican City and Timor-Leste (E. Timor), and the worst regions Micronesia, Australasia and Melanesia.
For more, see:
Seychelles ranks 158th in the world with regard to its responsibility towards the environment. This rank is derived from 5 data sets. Seychelles does better than average when it comes to its environmental performance37 (the best in Africa), its sign-up rate to major international accords on protecting the environment and in its forested percent change 2000-202038. But, there's bad news too. Seychelles does worse than average for reducing annual meat consumption per person39 (amongst the worst in Africa) and in energy to GDP efficiency40.Forest Area Change 2000-2020 Higher is better38
